See MoreDavid Burns, costarring in the show, collapsed onstage on Friday, March 12, 1971, just a few days into the tryout run at the Forrest Theatre in Philadelphia. Most press reports at the time stated either that Burns died immediately or was declared dead on arrival at Jefferson Hospital, across the street from the Forrest. The New York Times, however, stated that his death occurred at Jefferson Hospital approximately a half-hour after he collapsed onstage.
Burns's understudy, Coley Worth, played Burns's role at the matinee and evening performances the following day. Those were the last performances in Philadelphia. The run there was cut short because of Burns's death. At the start of Broadway previews, Hans Conried took over.
