Original Broadway Production (1971)

Trivia & History

Although some later accounts stated that David Burns died onstage at the Forrest Theatre during the pre-Broadway tryout, contemporary accounts stated that he collapsed onstage when he had a heart attack but that his death occurred approximately a half-hour later at Jefferson Hospital. He was temporarily replaced by his understudy, Coley Worth. At the start of Broadway previews, Hans Conried took over.

Early announcements about the production stated that Ron Field would direct.
