There was difficulty finding an actor to play Herbie on the tour who met with Ethel Merman's approval. Finally, Alfred Sandor, who became the understudy near the end of the Broadway run, was hired, but Jack Klugman agreed to play Herbie on the tour's first stop, in Rochester, as Sandor was either not yet ready or had not been finally approved by Merman.
