Trivia & History

In his book, Contradictions: Notes on Twenty-six Years in the Theatre, Harold Prince wrote that the role of Amalia was offered to Julie Andrews. Andrews was interested in playing the role, but she was committed to filming Mary Poppins. She said that she'd be very happy to do the show after filming was finished. Prince was unwilling to wait, and he cast Barbara Cook instead. Dorothy Collins was the other finalist for the role. In the fall of 1964, Collins played the role in a California production.
