Hamilton Deane originally planned to play Dracula himself but chose Van Helsing after deciding it was the meatier role. The production established the now-iconic image of Dracula as a suave aristocrat in evening dress and flowing cape. Deane arranged for a uniformed nurse to be on hand at performances to administer smelling salts to anyone who fainted. Quincey Morris was recast as a woman to fit the available company of actors.
