Hamilton Deane originally planned to play Dracula himself but chose Van Helsing after deciding it was the meatier role. The production established the now-iconic image of Dracula as a suave aristocrat in evening dress and flowing cape. Deane arranged for a uniformed nurse to be on hand at performances to administer smelling salts to anyone who fainted. Quincey Morris was recast as a woman to fit the available company of actors.
The production transferred here from the Little Theatre to accommodate larger audiences, reaching its 200th performance during the run. It subsequently transferred again to the Prince of Wales Theatre.
