A stage portrait of Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. unfolds as a glittering pageant of his own making. Through standards such as “A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody,” “Somebody Loves Me,” “More Than You Know” and “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows,” the impresario’s career intersects with Anna Held, Lillian Lorraine, Billie Burke and Marilyn Miller. Ensemble spectacles, comic turns and ballets evoke his pursuit of beauty and box-office ballyhoo, while shifting affections and financial pressures expose the personal costs behind the glitter. The evening builds to a nostalgic summation of the legend and the legacy he engineered.
