Trivia & History

Producer Garth Drabinsky had been convicted in 2009 for fraud and forgery for defrauding the shareholders of his company Livent. He served a 17-month stint in prison. Many involved in Paradise Square were wary about working with him, but felt that safeguards would be put in place. But Drabinsky severely cut costs resulting in unpaid wages and injuries:

Scott Mallalieu, a group sales agent, sued Drabinsky for unpaid wages.
A crew member was climbing a ladder during a rehearsal, fell and subsequently had to have their pinky finger amputated.
Equity and United Scenic Artists Local USA 829 filed a lawsuit to collect nearly $350,000 in benefit contributions, wages, and payments owed to both unions and their members cumulatively, citing "outstanding payments and benefits, and a continued pattern of abuse and neglect that created an unsafe and toxic work environment."

Drabinsky has been added to Equity's “Do Not Work” list.
