This controversial production of a new adaptation was a co-production with La Scala and the English National Opera. The La Scala engagement was canceled after Stéphane Lissner, the artistic and general director of La Scala, saw the production in Paris, but later the decision was reversed and the production did play there as scheduled.
In this original incarnation of the production, Voltaire's narration was in French but the rest of the text was in English.
