During rehearsals, Barry Bostwick left the leading role of Manfred von Richthofen. Author-director Des McAnuff said in the New York Times that this was because of "artistic differences. We just saw the role differently." Bostwick was replaced by John Vickery. This cast change caused the first preview to be delayed from July 13, 1982, to July 16.
