Trivia & History

This return engagement was a smash during its four weeks at City Center, which at that time was sometimes used as a venue for commercial runs of return engagements. Even with super-low prices — a $3 top compared to a top of $6.60 for Annie Get Your Gun, which was then in its final weeks — the grosses were very strong. With the Ballets Russe de Monte Carlo booked to start immediately at City Center after the end of the scheduled four-week run of Carousel, it moved to the Majestic for what was hoped to be another six weeks, until South Pacific was to open there. At the Majestic, the top price was raised to $3.60. For whatever reason, grosses plummeted at the Majestic, and it closed after just two weeks there.
