On July 5, 1964, Dave King replaced Frankie Howerd as Prologus / Pseudolus. A couple of weeks after King took over, he became ill and never returned to the production, which closed on July 31. On Friday, July 30, Howerd returned from a vacation in Beirut. Hearing of the situation, he offered to play, for no fee, the closing performance on the following evening, which everyone happily agreed to and he did.
