This was one of two productions produced by the Metropolitan Opera in the 299-seat Forum Theatre (now the Mitzi Newhouse) in February 1973. The other production was a double bill of Maurice Ohana's Syllabaire pour Phèdre and Purcell's Dido and Aeneas productions. These were to be the first of an ongoing series of Mini-Met productions of smaller operas that would profit from being produced in more intimate spaces than the enormous Metropolitan Opera House. Despite rave reviews and sold-out runs, the Mini-Met idea disappeared after these two productions.
