The surnames of most of the Scottish characters were changed for this production as the original names used on Broadway were judged to be not authentically Scottish.
In addition, the action was moved back to 1935 because if it had been set in the present, it would have made the costumes of the citizens of Brigadoon historically inaccurate (as they had been in New York) because kilts were banned in Scotland from 1746 till 1782.
