Despite what some online sources say, the first Broadway preview was on Thursday, October 19, 1972. The production opened on Monday, October 23, after having played five previews, including a special Sunday evening performance on October 22. After opening, the production initially played a Monday through Saturday performance schedule.

The production was originally capitalized at $650,000, but producer Stuart Ostrow could not raise the money. He ended up cutting corners to reduce the budget to $500,000, and putting his own money into the production, going so far as to take out a bank loan using his house as collateral to provide money for the production.

The playbill's cast list never included the members of the ensemble who did not have specific character names. (This is probably why they are not listed in either The Best Plays of 1972-1973 or in Theatre World for the 1972-1973 season.) Those cast members' names were only listed on the main credits page. In our complete cast list, we list them as "The Players," since that is how they were identified in the playbill's list of musical numbers.
