The show was a relatively early example of a Broadway musical choosing to forego an out-of-town tryout. Instead, it was decided that there would be a long preview period on Broadway and that the previews would be advertised. The total of 30 previews was unusual but not quite unheard of at the time, but even more previews had originally been planned. The opening had originally been planned for April 20, but it was advanced to April 17.
