Trivia & History

Originally, the production was to have played a tryout run in Boston during the week of October 14, 1940, but no theatre seems to have been booked. On September 20, 1940, it was reported in several newspapers that producer Albert Lewis had decided that the production would not play out of town prior to starting performances on Broadway.  Most of the papers did not cite a reason for the decision, but the New York Herald Tribune reported that the plans for an out-of-town tryout had been “abandoned because of the heavy settings.” It was announced that instead the production play several previews on Broadway.

At this time, the production was to open on Broadway on October 21, 1940, after playing three previews, the first to be on October 17. On October 18, it was reported in the press that the production would instead open on October 25.
