Contains the opening section of "Invocation," cut from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
The published script of the original version includes alternate lyrics for several sections and a couple of individual lines to eliminate references that only make sense if the show is production in and around a swimming pool (as it was in the original Yale production).
Sondheim revised the lyric slightly for the concert performance of the score at the Library of Congress in 2000, which led to a studio recording of the score as it then stood. The lyric was revised further for the 2004 Lincoln Center production of a considerably revised version of the show.
The lyric heard at Yale has never been commercially recorded.
The song was first commercially recorded on the live recording of A Stephen Sondheim Evening, a concert that was later licensed as a revue for production under the title You're Gonna Love Tomorrow. Although that recording mostly incorporates the changes made for productions not performed in and around a pool, it otherwise has no revisions.
