Alice James, a movie star who is disgusted with the ways of Hollywood (including the advances of her producer), is traveling by train when she decides to escape. She leaves the train when it stops at the small town of Pleasantville, Kansas, where she gets a job as a waitress in the station restaurant. Rival film directors try to find her. A correspondence-course detective, P. T. (Peachy) Robinson, is hired to search for her. Despite his incompetence, Peachy discovers and exposes Alice but not before she has met a reporter named Richard Grey, who is actually the president of Popular Pictures posing as a reporter. They fall in love, and she promises to marry him.
