A film version was supposed to be made with Marion Davies in 1928 and actually began filming. However, the production was halted when the MGM converted its studio to sound. The 1937 film incorporated footage from the unfinished version, mostly exterior shots.

There are four other St. Louis MUNY productions not included in the above production list. The dates are unknown.

Many revivals have used some Cole Porter songs from the film version.

The story was based on a visit made by the daughter of Queen Marie of Romania to the United States.
