Reportedly taped at the final performance of Richard Burton and Roddy McDowall, who left the cast at the same time. That was on the evening of September 16, 1961. Sometimes this recording has been dated as being from September 23, 1961, a week later, because Best Plays incorrectly listed the date of the first performance of Burton's replacement, William Squire, as September 25, 1961. Squire actually took over on September 18, 1961.
This recording is sometimes incorrectly listed as the closing night on Broadway. By that time, the original leads, all audibly on this recording, were long gone from the production. If there was a recording of closing night, with replacements in all major roles, we do not know of it.
