According to Adrian Wright's book West End Broadway, Judy Bruce, although not the first or second understudy but the third understudy, took over for Pat Kirkwood when she went on vacation. The first understudy was unwell and the second did not know the role.
Producer Jack Hylton decided to close the show, which apparently had been in trouble at the box office, and Bruce closed the run as Ruth.
