Variety predicted great success for Shootin' Star once it reached Broadway. Many critics, however, drew comparisons to the similarly-themed Annie Get Your Gun.
Originally set to begin rehearsals in October 1945 but it was delayed, possibly by the replacement of the original bookwriters. Rehearsals began in February 1946 instead.
