In 1880, Billy the Kid, whose infamous career as a killer started at age 12 protecting his mother from attack, attempts to settle down in Lincoln County, New Mexico where he plans to marry Amy, the daughter of a homesteader. When rustler Francis T. Corey and his gang steal Amy's father's cattle, Billy and his friends attack the Corey gang starting the Lincoln County War. Billy, with a price on his head and hunted by U. S. Army General Wallace, escapes to live with Mexican friends. Returning to Lincoln County, Billy locates Corey and kills him. Ross Dixon, Billy's best friend who has become the new Sheriff, shoots and kills Billy.
