The production was canceled before rehearsals started. Early press reports referred to it as The Exception and the Rule. In September 1968, the title A Pray by Blecht started appearing in press reports. Stuart Ostrow, the producer, announced that it would open at the Broadhurst in February 1969.
Stephen Sondheim later wrote this in his book Look, I Made a Hat (page 318): "The title A Pray By Blecht was Lenny's. None of us could talk him out of it, but I assure you we had no intention of keeping it."
