Trivia & History

  • The production had an overwhelming amount of controversy.  Joanna Pacitti, picked in a national contest to play Annie, was uncerimoniously dumped prior to Broadway with no official reason ever given.  Roz Ryan was also replaced by a more marketable Nell Carter.
  • Carter created some controversy for complaining about the TV commercial.  The commercial featured Marcia Lewis, a white actress, as Hannigan.  The producers claimed this was because a commercial was too cost-prohibitive to reshoot.  Carter claimed it was racism, and was afraid the producers didn't want the audience to know that Hanngian was being played by a black actress.
