Trivia & History

Janet Blair was originally announced for the role of Julie. On Monday, August 19, 1957, it was reported in the New York Times that Janet Blair had withdrawn from the production after a production meeting that had occurred three days earlier (on Friday). Also at the meeting were Howard Keel and the production staff. Martin Baum, Blair's press representative, was quoted as saying that "Miss Blair discovered she would be expected to conform exactly to preconceived ideas [of] how the part of Julie should be played." He added that "she would be considerably hampered and limited in her honest desire to bring fresh and deeper qualities to the part." The article suggested that there was, in particular, a clash between Keel and Blair.
