The building opened in 1897 as an ice-skating rink. During 1900, it was renovated to become both a theatre and circus, opening in this form in 1901. There was a circus ring in the middle, surrounded by seats, and a proscenium stage at one end of the huge space. Circus acts would be presented in the first half, and variety acts were presented on the proscenium stage in the second half.
