The United Methodist Church was built at addresses 1411 Quadra Street / 907 Pandora Avenue in 1890. In 1925 through a merger of congregations the Methodist Chuch became part of the United Church of Canada and the church became Metropolitan United Church.
The wing that today contains the Metro Studio Theatre was built in 1952 as Metroplitan Hall.
The church was added to the Canadian Register of Historic Places on 1979-06-28.
In 1997 the church was sold to the Victoria Conservatory of Music, which then invested Can$1.6 million in renovations and construction of studios, classrooms and offices over the next 2 years.
In May 2005, the non-profit Intrepid Theatre Company, producer of the annual Victoria Fringe Festival, leased the Conservatory's gymnasium for five years and retrofitted it into a black box performance venue.
In an extension of the original arrangement, today Intrepid continues to operate the Metro Studio Theatre, using the space for its own productions, for Victoria Conservatory performances and for rentals to other local & visiting companies.
