The American was one of the first theatres to open in the 42nd Street theatre district.
Became a burlesque house in 1929. Fire destroyed the interior in 1930. It was torn down in 1932 but there is some evidence that it may have been rebuilt and used throughout the 1930s.
The rooftop garden was enclosed in 1909 and featured 1400 seats.
