First version of the song. The lyric was totally revised either before rehearsals or during rehearsals. The current evidence we know of is inconclusive. This earlier version was first heard publicly in Sondheim: A Musical Tribute. A slightly different version of the lyric was used in Side by Side by Sondheim. It's not clear which of those two versions was the exact lyric originally written by Sondheim. Recent revivals have tended to use one of those versions rather than the lyric heard in the original production.
