The show is set in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, and moves back and forth between 1923 and 1945. It tells dual stories: One of a young man named Billy Cane, who returns from World War II to pursue his dream of being a writer; and the other of Alice Murphy, the editor of a Southern literary journal who has a secret past.
