Damon Runyon's story Madame La Gimp, which had been adapted onscreen in 1933 as Lady for a Day and in 1961 as Pocketful of Miracles, both directed by Frank Capra.
There were several press reports in 1988 that a production was being planned for London, with Elaine Stritch to star as Apple Annie. No production of the show ever materialized, but a demo featuring eleven songs and a reprise was recorded around 1990.
