The show was based on the Old Bailey trial of Oz magazine, an underground hippy magazine that was published from 1967 to 1973 in London. In 1970, the magazine invited school children to edit an issue (one of the cartoons featured Rupert Bear having sex). The editors were put on trial under the 1959 Obscene Publications Act. They were found guilty and sentenced to up to 15 in prison. The conviction was successfully appealed.
Each courtroom scene actually took place during the trial. The text has been edited from the actual transcript.
