Composer Burton Lane acquired the stage rights to the novel in November 1958. Work on the show was delayed because Lane needed to get the screen rights from Warner Brothers because of their classic film version of the novel.
Lane had hoped to collaborate with E.Y. Harburg on the score. He wanted Kermit Bloomgarden to produce.
Ferber wasn't supportive of the project. On October 29, 1959, Ferber wrote to her friend Joe Linz saying, "You will be revolted when I tell you that Giant is being tortured into a musical play. Perhaps it will never come off. I'm doing absolutely nothing about it myself. Burton Lane is doing the music. Kermit Bloomgarden is producing. God Knows. Wot a world!"
