Synopsis

A high-stepping tribute to high school marching bands and misfits everywhere!  With just nine members and dwindling funds, the Cuyahoga High Marching Beavers are close to extinction.  Elliott, the overweight sousaphone player is determined to finally be noticed and respected in his new position as band captain. He only has eyes for Nicole, the twirler girl, while his best friend Laura has secretly been pining for him. Other members include Stewart (asthmatic runt and child of the principal Ms. Dixon), Spitz (the egotistical trumpeter), Natalia (exchange student from Braslovia who also plays the trumpet), Molly (emo), Alvin (gay), Kyle (video game nerd), and of course Mr. Hornsby (the band teacher who just wants to make a difference in these kids' lives. When Jake, a troubled athlete, is relegated to their ranks, he makes waves with his attitude, street smarts, and natural rock musicianship as their drummer. He also catches the affection of both Laura and Nicole. Funds are cut, equipment is cut, rehearsal space is cut, all to make way for the more profitable clubs at the school. Finally, the band gets an invitation to perform at the prestigious Festival of Champions, due solely to a renegade drum solo by Jake, much to the chagrin of Elliott. When the Football equipment is found destroyed with a torn T Shirt from Jake's former school, he is forced out of the band. Laura decides for once in her life to take a stand and (falsely) confess, for the greater good of the band. Elliiott and Jake must make amends and find common ground to exonerate Laura. Jake knows that it was the t shirt he lent to Stewart, and as the most frequent subject of jock bullying, he is the most likely candidate. Eventually, Stewart confesses, Elliott and Laura make up, and realize that sometimes it's a good thing to just be best friends. He hands over his captainship to Laura, and she leads the Beavers to their final championship. Everyone, even the adults, learn to "embrace their inner geek."
