The Queen's son, Edward Windsor, was working for the Really Useful Group (Andrew Lloyd Webber's producing entity) and commissioned Lloyd Webber and Rice to write a piece to be performed as part of a pageant put on for the Queen's 60th birthday.
This is the first piece that Lloyd Webber and Rice wrote together since Evita (1978).
Music from this work was used in Aspects of Love (1989) and Sunset Boulevard (1993).
