Sarah Chapman, an employee in the Bryant and May match factory, enlists the help of Anne Besant in improving the working conditions of the hard done by women.
A similar story to The Matchgirls which opened in March 1966. That show closed a month before Strike a Light! opened and the similarities were noticed by many. In an attempt to differentiate it from the earlier show, Strike a Light! was advertised as "not a musical about misery, disease and squalor, but a musical about courage, vitality and hope".
