In 1820s Honolulu, Chief Lanakila, a proud Hawaiian patriarch, decrees that none of his thirteen daughters may marry until the eldest, Mele, is wed. Mele, however, is in love with an American sailor, clashing with her father’s wish that she marry a Hawaiian of noble lineage. As suitors from both Hawaiian and foreign backgrounds pursue the sisters, the daughters defy their father’s rigid traditions. With comic schemes, romantic entanglements, and cultural tensions rising, Lanakila must reconcile his devotion to heritage with the growing desires of his daughters for freedom and love.
