Synopsis

In a country parish, an idealistic gentleman hires a fashionable dealer in magic to lace the villagers’ tea with a love potion that will ignore rank and convention. Overnight, unlikely couples pair off, jealousies flare, and a promised match teeters. As the spell’s fine print emerges, the community must choose between easy happiness and the steep price of the contract. A final, literal descent settles the debt, the mismatches are undone, and everyday order—tinged with irony—returns.

Trivia & History

The Sorcerer was restored to the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company's repertoire in 1971 after an absence of many years. It is now part of the regular rotation of G&S works.
