The original version, titled Comedy, was based on the commedia dell'arte sketch The Great Magician by Basillio Locatelli. The plot was dropped when the version titled Smile, Smile, Smile opened on Broadway, retaining most of the score.

Trivia & History

An earlier version of Smile, Smile, Smile, titled Comedy opened at the Colonial Theatre in Boston on November 6, 1972. This version had a book by Lawrence Carra based on Basillio Locatelli's commedia dell'arte sketch The Great Magician.  It was to have opened on Broadway at the Martin Beck on November 28, 1972, but instead it closed in Boston on November 18, 1972, After a rewrite that kept most of the original score, but featured a completely rewritten book with a new plot, it opened Off-Broadway as Smile, Smile, Smile. The new book was by Robert Russell.
