The post-Broadway version had its West Coast premiere in San Francisco in 1988. A planned tour failed to materialize, however.
This version came about when lyricist Carolyn Leigh died suddenly during the workshop stage of 1983 version of Smile. Work began on a new version with Howard Ashman replacing Leigh and bookwriter Jack Heifner. With the exception of the music for the title number none of 1983 version was was retained.
