Synopsis

An anthology revue traces American life through the songs people sang, as a salute to American folk and popular music. Scenes move from colonial towns and frontier cabins to factory floors and city parks, each introduced by narration and verse. Traditional ballads (“Foggy, Foggy Dew,” “Polly Wolly Doodle”), spirituals (“Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel”), work songs (“Hammer Ring”), and Tin Pan Alley tunes (“I Got Rhythm,” “Yes Sir, That’s My Baby”) chart love, labor, legend, and change. Modern-dance interludes connect the tableaux, building to a communal finale that salutes the nation’s many voices.
