After a blow to the head in Dresden, a man awakens believing he is the refined Michael Bramleigh. His new persona rockets him into high society, an engagement to Gerry Martin, and favor with Commissioner Bauer and Ilse Bauer, even as earlier habits and acquaintances—especially Gita and Johnny Stewart—pull him back.
