Based on a 1969 book edited by Stephen M. Joseph. The book was an anthology of the writings of some 200 children of the ghetto (ages 7-18) and edited by Joseph, who was their teacher. Original idea by Herbert Schapiro.

A collection of songs inspired by the stories of underprivileged New York kids.

All of the lyrics are based on the writings of the children and "The Horse" and "War Babies" are children's poems presented exactly as written.
