Although Brooklyn's Hilda Pennypacker is the World's Fair "Miss 35th Avenue," she is bedeviled by her little brother, Georgie, domineered by her mother, Lucy, and pursued by their evil, lecherous landlord, Lombardi. Hilda's fantasy of having her true love, meek wool salesman Kip, romance her in fairy-tale style becomes reality when Georgie explodes a giant firecracker transporting everyone to a mythical land where love is forbidden. It is ruled by a dictator, "Number One" (Hilda's unbearable brat of a brother in the guise of Napoleon), who is protected by a seventeen-headed dragon. Brave Kip dispatches a magician, a wicked witch, and a giant guarding the Dragon's Castle. Kip kills the multi-headed Dragon, gives Number One Georgie a long over-due spanking, and wins the fair princess, Hilda.
