In New York, John Smith learns he can inherit a fortune if he divorces his wife, Lucille, a former vaudevillian disfavored by his late aunt. The couple plan a quick divorce and remarriage, arranging a fake infidelity to satisfy the law. Their scheme collides with a hotel swarming with other “John Smiths,” meddling friends, and advancing suitors. Misunderstandings multiply until revelations untangle the impostures, the inheritance is secured, and the reunited pair step into prosperity with their marriage—and reputations—intact.
