Based on the novel of the same title by Truman Capote. Capote had earlier adapted the novel as a play, maintaining the novel's title. The play was produced on Broadway on March 27, 1952, at the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Al Hirschfeld Theatre).

Synopsis

In a small Southern town, a free-spirited woman leaves her controlling family to live in a treehouse with her young relative and a loyal companion. Joined by a colorful evangelist and her troupe, they form a makeshift household. Rumors and conflicts arise when townsfolk seek their secret tonic recipe, drawing legal trouble and public spectacle. As tensions peak, unexpected alliances form, leading to reconciliation and a renewed sense of belonging for the mismatched group.
