Synopsis

A spirited former chorus girl, Elsie, secretly weds a wealthy young man. His aristocratic family, determined to protect their social standing, schemes to dissolve the match. Confronted by disdain and deception, Elsie must rely on her wit, resilience, and the loyalty of her new husband to prove that love and character outweigh money and class. The story unfolds with comic misunderstandings and lively musical numbers before ending in reconciliation and acceptance.

Trivia & History

The Pittsburgh Press reported that the show was on its way to New York and would open under the title Elsie. Elsie finally premiered in New York in 1923 with a score by Noble Sissle, Eubie Blake, Monte Carlo and Alma Sanders with Charles W. Bell repeating his duties as librettist. However, it only lasted 40 performances.
