Trivia & History

This album may well be the rarest show album of the 1970's. RCA pressed only four thousand copies which were to be sent to the various cities where the show was to play in hopes people who saw the show would buy the album. When the show closed after only fourteen days the only albums that had been shipped were those to Oakland. Most were returned to RCA except for a few given to cast members and crew and possibly a small number given out by salesmen as promotion copies. The stores in New York City did get a few copies as a copy ordered from Discount Records in Birmingham, Michigan, was received from their New York branch a few days later. One source of confusion about this album is that, from advance information received, the Schwann Catalalog listed it as Clown Around (OC) RCA LSO-1174 (S) and directly under this listing was Clownaround (OC) RCA LSP-4741 (S), P8S-2009 (Eight-Track Cartridge), PK-2009 (Cassette). The LSO number was never issued, nor were the eight track or cassette. The title of the show appears on the front cover of the LSP album as ClownAround on the back cover as ClownAround and CLOWNAROUND and on the label as Clownaround. Regardless of how it was spelled, this album is a rarity of almost legendary proportions. All returned copies as well as those remaining in the RCA warehouse were melted down and probably used for pressing on one of RCA's budget labels.
